It took nearly an hour to get the fire under control, Fazekas said. Two other adults in the home, Layona’s mother and the mother’s boyfriend, escaped through a first-floor bedroom window. They were transported to a local hospital with smoke inhalation and released; the mother’s boyfriend also suffered burns on his hand from trying to rescue Layona. The teen’s body was found in her bed with her two dogs, who, along with a cat, also died in the blaze. Fazekas said a preliminary report indicates the fire started from a lamp on the first floor.
